Loren Humphrey

A drummer by calling, a producer by accident; by association. Let’s go back to the start.. out of necessity, Loren Humphrey recorded demos for all of his bands, finding himself doing more and more recording. This wasn’t particularly new though as Loren was already undertaking electronic production for skateboarding companies at his parents house in San Diego, using mainly samplers, then graduating to microphones.

After moving to NYC in the mid 2000’s with his band The Willowz and later forming Guards (with Willowz bandmate Richie Follin), Loren found work as a drummer once those bands had gone on hiatus, with spells in Last Shadow Puppets, Tame Impala and Florence and the Machine as well as session work with the likes of Cults, Adam Green and Arctic Monkeys.

Even as the touring got more hectic, Loren was still helping friends record and helping friends mix. Loren’s ability to understand how every recorded element works as a whole, in context, and in service of the song meant that there were no off days on the rare occasions when his touring schedule had him back home in New York.

Loren listens for the energy and despite his dedication to analogue recording techniques he feels technicality doesn’t matter. Get the whole right “and you’ll remember things as you want to, it’s all an illusion”.

So the drummer is a producer. By accident, or design, or by fate. And an ever building discography featuring engineering on albums by Geese and Arctic Monkeys amongst others and noted productions on tracks and albums by artists as varied as Miles Kane, Lana Del Rey, Willie J Healey and Cameron Winter with upcoming albums from Automatic and Boyish.

Loren lives and works in Tuxedo Park, NY out of the studio he owns and operates, Magic Mountain, as well as a healthy amount of time at the legendary Diamond Mine in Long Island City, NY.

He continues to make music for skateboard companies.
